The Quick 60-Second Triage
Run these four checks in order before anything else:
1. Plugged in and powered? Connect the original charger and leave it for five minutes. Some MacBooks refuse to start from a completely dead battery.
2. Charger light before/after? On older MacBooks the MagSafe connector glows amber then green. On USB-C models, check the wall adapter is seated properly.
3. Is it actually booting? Press the power button for ten seconds. The screen may be dead while the machine is alive – look for the keyboard backlight or a startup chime.
4. Try a reset. On Intel MacBooks hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for ten seconds. On Apple Silicon, unplug everything, hold the power button for ten seconds.

Cause #1: A Dead or Failing Battery and Power System
A heavily discharged lithium cell can hide internal damage. Some MacBooks shut down hard when the battery drops below a critical voltage and then act dead even though the machine is fine.

Cause #2: Logic Board Power Delivery Failure
The logic board converts the charger’s power into every voltage the Mac needs. A failed power-delivery stage – often one capacitor or MOSFET – leaves the board alive but unable to start.

Cause #3: A Dead Screen (Not a Dead MacBook)

Cause #5: Liquid Damage That Dried Quietly
